The Psychedelic Furs on Film

I may not be a professional concert photographer, but I am undeniably a devoted fan of The Psychedelic Furs. On the evening of Saturday, September 30th, The Furs took the stage at the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah. I decided I would attempt to capture some images with an Olympus LT Zoom 105, loaded with Kodak P3200 Tmax film.

Manufactured by Olympus in 1997, the LT Zoom 105 is a straightforward compact camera featuring a 35-105mm, f/4.9 zoom lens. The model I used is the later QD version, equipped with a “panoramic” setting that effectively masks the image within the camera. This camera, discovered by my son at a thrift store for a mere $10, boasts a burgundy “Leather Tech” cover, evoking memories of the interior of my grandfather’s 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.

Embracing a film I had not previously used, Kodak Tmax P3200, I captured some contrasty, and grainy images from my vantage point in the 14th row, featuring Richard Butler, Tim Butler, Mars Williams, Amanda Kramer, Rich Good, and Zack Alford. While the concert itself exceeded the quality of these photos, the experience of merging music and photography made for an enjoyable evening.

Camera: Olympus LT Zoom 105 (1997)
Film: Kodak Tmax P3200
Process: Kodak HC-110 (1+31) 10:30 Min @ 20°C
Scanned: Epson V700 Photo

  1. Very cool! A few months ago I went to see The Cure. I brought my Pentax IQZoom 170SL and got a few decent shots, despite the odds being stacked against me (in the nosebleeds at the far end, and using just 400 speed film.) The best one is below. I’m seeing Depeche Mode in a couple weeks, I think I’ll bring the same camera with color 800 speed film.
